Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
I woke up this morning and checked my eamil, to find that one of the people I'm living with(in college supplied housing) will not be coming back to school in the fall. Ack. Allyson thinks that they'll let us keep the house, even with 3 people instead of 4, but I'm going to email Student Life just in case.

Steve's birthday party: It was the sort of party that I never would have gone to in high school. Item one for the defense: the chess game, played with shot glasses. If your side captured a piece, you had to drink it... It was fun, but I definitely wouldn't want all the social gatherings I went to to be like that. I managed to burn my hand. Some one decided to put sparklers(!) on the cake instead of candles, and when they were finished sparkling, the magnesium crumbled and fell onto the cake. I reached out to grab on of the sparkler sticks, so as to fish the crumbled magnesium out of the frosting and accidentally grabbed the stick by the top, which was still very hot. The blisters are on my thumb and my first finger, but fortunately not where the pencil rests.

After things had wound down, I went to Lisa's house to sleep. She hadn't had a very good time, between it not really being her kind of thing, the presence of her ex and his new lover, and cramps, and spent much of it curled up asleep on a couch in the dining room. I do have a picture of her though watching the chess game and smiling. I feel bad about encouraging her to come.
I have cute pictures of other people as well, which I will eventually post(yes, along with an organized version of all the other pictures - apparently, Apache :: Gallery is going to love me).

Parents still in Medusa. They may however be coming back this evening instead of late tomorrow morning. Much homework must be done. Test on Tuesday. Afterwards, I will actually get the home network properly set up and erect Sabriel in my room and make her workstationish(she currently only has a very minimal install of NetBSD, as she didn't have network access, and I'm planning on fleshing out the NetBSD install and installing Gentoo Linux).

Also: Liz, when are you going back to California? Please tell me it wasn't today, although I fear it was, as I'd really like to see you before then.

She posted about it a couple days ago -- I thought you knew? Maybe you can get a fourth person?

(Re: photos -- please put up soon? And the photoshop docs of the pages you've already done? It would be nice to get the thing done by the end of summer, and I've only got about three weeks. Otherwise it'll have to wait until intercession.)

We may be able to have 3 people in the mod, especially if there isn't too much of a housing crunch.

Yes. Will be motivated and learning how to use Apache:Gallery on Wednesday, after exam. Photoshop docs will be put up in my SRC webspace as soon as I locate them. Tuesday evening okay for those?

By the way, it's intersession, as in between sessions. Intercession is the act of interceding, like the Virgin Mary does, or is a "prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another"(Merriem Webster Dictionary).

Yeah, dude, we had this discussion before. TYPO, okay?

Best party I went to in college had death chess -- and that's not normally my sort of thing, either -- but a friend of mine was independently wealthy and a complete maniac, and wanted to throw a graduation party his way, ie not dependent on college social funds, ie barely dependent on college rules...there were cage dancers (including a cross-dressed male who did a nearly-total strip show and managed to look like a hot girl the whole way -- but maybe that was just the blacklights?), dancing, dancing elsewhere to different music, a fountain of wine, a full (and free) bar, people dressed alarmingly right and left (myself included, as it happens), and a death chess tournament, coincidentally won by a pair of math professors. (All the teams were pairs -- usually one was the brain, and one was the liver.)

As I said, not usually my kind of thing, and it's a little weird to run into your slightly tipsy department chair while (erm) alarmingly dressed, but certainly some of the most fun I had in college...

The problem I have with Apache::Gallery is that it doesn't do captions. I think I might end up using Gallery instead, even though I dislike PHP, just for that reason. I will have to make it use my user DB instead of its own, though. Either that or one of these days I'll write my own - it shouldn't be hard.

And I agree - I wouldn't want all, or even a significant fraction of, my social engagements to be like that party. It was, however, quite fun.

I looked at all of the picture gallery creating programs a while. I decided on one, and I think it was Apache::Gallery. Some were incredibly primitive, at about the level where it would be easier to write my own instead of making it do what I want in an attractive manner.

Drinking chess pieces? That sounds painful ;)

Also, I'm amused that you described it as "the sort of party that I never would have gone to in high school," while Katie described some of it as "very high school." :P

Well, it was in many ways "very high school", which is why it's unlike parties I would have gone to in high school.

Haha, good point. So as you get older you get more comfortable engaging with high-schoolishness, because it's far enough away to be unthreatening? ;)

Something like that.
